SilTerra Integrates Compliant, Cost-Effective Cloud Storage with Wasabi and Nakivo

ISO security standard drives the need to streamline data storage and backup processes 

SilTerra found its costly on-premises storage system could no longer meet its needs. “All of SilTerra’s data was kept physically on-premises,” said Rozaimi Ahmad, Data Center Team Lead for SilTerra’s IT department. “We were constantly uploading data to our tape library and external discs, but it’s well known that over time, tape will deteriorate, and keeping everything categorized in a way it could be easily found again was proving to be time-consuming. We needed to ensure data would remain secure, intact, and recoverable.” 

Maintaining on-premises storage limited capacity and left data vulnerable to security breaches. SilTerra knew it needed a better approach to ensure compliance with stringent ISO 27001 information security and cyber-risk management requirements while establishing a more robust backup and recovery strategy.  “Data protection is paramount,” Ahmad said. “We’re working with business-critical data and partners around the world who rely on us. We have a security team that overlooks our entire infrastructure so that no matter whether data is stored onsite or in the cloud, we’re mitigating potential breaches or cyberattacks from hackers.”  

But whatever approach was taken also needed to meet key metrics for SilTerra. The company conducted extensive research on storage capacity, data upload and download speeds, and—crucially—pricing of cloud products. “Wasabi was the most attractive solution for SilTerra because of its price predictability,” Ahmad said. “Wasabi’s straightforward pricing made it an easy choice for SilTerra’s management team.”

SilTerra set up its solution using Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage with S3 Object Lock, Nakivo backup software, and OneT as its managed service provider. The company also makes use of Wasabi’s S3-compatible command line interface to integrate with Linux operations. Data upload is automated as much as possible, Ahmad said. “We have multiple methods of uploading files to Wasabi, ensuring data remains robust and reliable.”  

 Ahmad shared that Wasabi’s secure storage features are key to SilTerra’s backup and recovery strategy. “Data is securely locked and encrypted with Wasabi’s Object Lock immutable storage feature, and it’s easily restored after any malicious incidents. We can protect our data from exposure thanks to how seamlessly Nakivo and Wasabi work together. OneT also provides helpful technical resources and easy-to-understand explanations. They’ve been very supportive.”

What’s Next for SilTerra?  

In the future, SilTerra looks forward to leveraging Wasabi’s lack of egress fees for accessing and restoring data. “Downloading data was not a critical factor for us when we first implemented our solution, but Wasabi doesn’t charge extra egress fees for accessing data. I can already see how that will benefit us if needed,” said Ahmad.
