Healthcare and Life Sciences
Save more data. Save more lives.
What If The Cure Was In The Data You Threw Away?
Hospitals and healthcare systems are benefiting from unprecedented innovation in information technology, helping improve everything from facility operations to patient care. But with these advancements come massive amounts of data—clinical research, digital imaging, and other patient data—that are taxing IT’s ability to cost-effectively manage and store in way that is secure, compliant, and always accessible.
HIPAA-compliant Hot Cloud Storage From Wasabi
Traditional on-premises storage solutions and first-generation cloud storage services like AWS S3, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform are simply too costly and complex for storing massive datasets. Wasabi is next-generation, secure, and fully HITECH and HIPAA-compliant cloud storage.
With Wasabi, you don’t have to throw away data to cut down your storage spending or deal with complicated storage tiers. You can afford to keep it all, at one lightning-fast tier of storage regardless of your specific use case.
Paving the Way for Life Sciences Breakthroughs
It was a great year for Wasabi, and an even greater year for big data breakthroughs in healthcare and life science. Check out our update from the floor of the 2018 Bio-IT World Conference and Expo.

Wasabi in Action
Industry Use Cases
Backup and Disaster Recovery
U.S. healthcare providers can use Wasabi to back up and archive their electronic healthcare records so that they’re always available for compliance audits. Using Wasabi for primary and backup storage complies with Federal HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and HITECH (Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act) regulations.
Data analytics
Medical researchers and business analysts don’t have time to wait for offline/offsite data. Whether mining insights to improve operations or patient outcomes, stored data is useless if it’s not immediately accessible for processing and analysis. With Wasabi hot cloud storage, all your data is active data…at inactive archive prices.
Medical IoT
From remote monitoring of patients to smart sensors and medical device integration, the Internet of medical things (IoMT) is sure to revolutionize patient care and hospital operations. Perhaps the greatest potential of IoMT will come from analyzing all the data that these interconnected devices will generate over time. Wasabi makes storing it all finally affordable.
Wasabi addresses three classes of data storage with one, low-cost, high-performance tier
- Active Data is readily visible to the operating system or application that creates or uses it and is immediately accessible to users.
- Active Archive is stored data that is online and instantly available. It does not need to be restored and rehydrated from an offline or remote source.
- Inactive Archive is stored data that is infrequently used or accessed. It is traditionally archived to tape and stored offsite.
Healthcare and Life Sciences Use Cases
Between the introduction of smart connected medical devices, plummeting costs of genome sequencing, and increasingly higher-resolution medical imaging, we are generating a wealth of information that is too expensive to store, yet too valuable—and, in many cases, unlawful—to throw away.
Analysts from IDC predict that healthcare data will reach 2.3 zettabytes (ZB) by 2020!1 Imagine the discoveries that await, if only there was an affordable way to store it all.

Genomics
Human genome sequencing is helping usher in an era of highly individualized medicine. With sequencing data in hand, healthcare professionals can accurately predict which medications will be most effective for a particular patient – and which will not.
But a single human genome takes up to 100 GB of storage space. By 2025, an estimated 40 exabytes of capacity will be required to store human genome data. Not knowing when a given patient’s genome data will be needed, healthcare providers can’t simply relegate inactive data to tape or other second- or third-tier options. They need to know they can get at any patient’s data when they need it.
With its single-tier, hot cloud storage approach, Wasabi solves the issue of traditional multi-tier implementations and the agonizing and time-consuming price/performance decisions . All data stored in Wasabi is active and readily available, at prices that are 80% cheaper than AWS S3. Data is encrypted at rest and in motion to comply with all Federal HIPAA and HITECH regulations. And because it’s in the cloud, it’s infinitely scalable and requires no capital investment or maintenance fees.
Big savings for large cohort genomics research
As the costs of whole genome sequencing continue to drop, the potential for large cohort genome analysis will dwarf today’s already difficult storage challenges. A 100,000 patient genome project generates about 20 petabytes (PB) of information. You would save up to $4 million if you stored those 20 PB in Wasabi instead of AWS S3!
Medical Imaging and Records
Hospitals and healthcare facilities are drowning in data as highly sensitive cameras, light wave and electron microscopy, and new modalities like 3D mammography and ultrasonic holography produce higher resolutions and larger file sizes.
Many organizations adopt a “save everything” approach to ensure compliance with complicated regulations. To mitigate the high cost of storing all this data, complicated storage tiers and data lifecycle management solutions are implemented. But trying to figure out what doctors and researchers need access to on a regular basis and what can safely go into cold storage makes these complicated tiering strategies even more complex… and expensive.
Wasabi hot cloud storage is ideal for large, unstructured content like medical images. It’s infinitely scalable and able to handle images at any resolution from any number of patients. Expenses move from CAPEX to OPEX. Best of all, all your data is online and accessible in an instant.
The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT)
Real-time diagnostic data from connected medical equipment and home-health wearables promises to revolutionize medicine. Patients with long-term or chronic conditions can be monitored from the comfort of their homes. Instant access to information will speed diagnoses and response times. But perhaps the greatest potential of the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) lies in the ability to save and analyze all the data these interconnected devices will generate over time.
Connected Medical Devices Mean Better Care, And More Data To Store
According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, within the next three years, 40 percent of the projected $117 billion IoT industry will be related to healthcare. The IoMT will generate exabytes of additional data, a portion of which compliance regulations will mandate you save. But what if we could store it all? What breakthroughs await when the power of analytics and machine learning are unleashed on vast archives of medical data?
The New Economics Of Cloud Storage
Storing all of your data may be impossibly cost prohibitive with today’s cloud storage technology. But Wasabi is next-generation cloud storage. Designed specifically for a world of petabytes and exabytes, Wasabi delivers unprecedented performance at unheard of prices.
