Why Trust Your Data to a Growth Company like Wasabi?

In 2015, we set out on a journey to make cloud data storage simple, affordable, fast, and secure. The goal was to cut the cost of cloud data storage by 80% while at the same time making it faster and secure.  And with that simple vision, Wasabi was born, founded by Carbonite co-founders, cloud storage pioneers and two of the leading minds in storage, David Friend and Jeff Flowers

At that time, Venture Capitalists, Channel Partners, Press and even Industry Analysts told us that we were crazy to try to compete with the hyperscaler clouds. It was common to hear “The cloud wars are over; AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform have won”. When our Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage service was launched in 2017, we were often asked “Why should we trust our data to a start-up?” That was a fair question. End-users and channel partners needed to be comfortable that a challenger like Wasabi is in it for the long-haul before trusting their data with us long-term.

A lot of time has passed since we launched our storage service in May 2017 and today customers worldwide believe Wasabi is a safe and smart alternative to AWS, Microsoft Azure, GCP and the others, and our continuing growth in total customers and total storage continues to point to a solid future for both Wasabi and our customers. Today, it is fair to say that Wasabi has moved beyond what people consider a “startup” into a “growth stage” company. Wasabi has dependable financing sources and is executing its global business plan

At Wasabi, we are laser-focused on storage. It is all we do, and we are in it for the long run. We provide enterprise-class storage that’s up to 80% less expensive, and faster than AWS S3, with no hidden egress fees or nickel-and-dime API request charges. All backed by a well-funded company, with a seasoned management team and a satisfied customer base.

When considering cloud storage providers, many end-users and channel partners automatically think of the hyperscalers like AWS, Azure, and GCP, but they don’t represent the entirety of the cloud storage market. In fact, smaller players account for almost 25% of the market according to research from IDC.

There are several compelling reasons why you should look beyond the big three.  These include:

  • Cost Efficiency: Challenger companies like Wasabi offer competitive pricing with easy-to-understand storage bills and two simple payment plans. As they operate with leaner structures, they can provide cost-effective solutions without compromising quality. This can be particularly advantageous for organizations with budget constraints.
  • Innovation: Hyperscaler alternatives are often founded on innovative ideas and approaches. They tend to be more agile and open to experimenting with new solutions. This can bring fresh perspectives and creative solutions to your business challenges.
  • Personalized Attention:  Hyperscaler alternatives have smaller client bases, allowing them to provide more personalized attention to their customers. This can result in a closer and more collaborative relationship, with the startup being more responsive to your specific needs.
  • Partnership Opportunities: For MSPs, channel partners, SaaS, and IaaS businesses, collaborating with non-hyperscalers can lead to strategic partnerships. If their products or services align with your business goals, forming a partnership can create mutually beneficial opportunities for growth and expansion.
  • Compliance Standards:  Wasabi adheres to stringent compliance standards to meet regulatory requirements and ensure the trust and confidence of our users. The platform aligns with industry-specific regulations and standards, such as GDPR, HIPAA, and SOC 2, to safeguard sensitive data and maintain the highest standards of data protection and privacy. By complying with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), Wasabi ensures the lawful and transparent processing of personal data for individuals within the European Union. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance is essential for handling healthcare data securely. Wasabi commits to maintaining the confidentiality and integrity of healthcare information. Additionally, adherence to SOC 2 standards attests to the platform's commitment to security, availability, processing integrity, confidentiality, and privacy of user data. Wasabi Technologies' dedication to compliance underscores our commitment to providing a secure and trustworthy cloud storage solution for businesses and individuals alike.
  • Security Features:  Wasabi, as focused as we are on storage, there can’t be storage without security. We provide advanced replication features that allow for data duplication across geographically diverse locations. This ensures data availability and durability, reducing the risk of data loss due to unforeseen events. In addition to the security features mentioned above, Wasabi Technologies also offers multi-factor authentication (MFA) to further protect user accounts from unauthorized access. One notable feature that Wasabi created for all customers is a multi-user authentication for account deletion. What this does is, when enabled, the account must undergo multiple trusted people’s approval before being deleted. This eliminates the possibility of accidental or malicious account deletion. These features, combined with their commitment to security, make Wasabi Technologies a trustworthy choice for your cloud storage needs.

The Wasabi Difference

One of the founding principles of Wasabi was to be significantly less expensive that the hyperscaler alternatives. Choosing AWS, Azure, or GCP comes at a steep price: to be specific, $21-23/TB per month vs. $6.99/TB/month with Wasabi. And that's just for storage. They all charge an additional money in egress fees compared to zero with Wasabi. And they nickel and dime their customers with micro-charges for every PUT, GET, and other API requests. Wasabi: zero. So, you could end up spending 5-10 times more to keep your data in the hyperscaler clouds. Is it worth it? What do you get for the extra money? You don't get more durability, both S3 and Wasabi offer 11 nines (99.999999999%) of object durability. You don't get more system availability, both SLAs are 99.99% uptime. You don't get better service, try calling Amazon for support and then try calling Wasabi.

Innovation in cloud storage product development is fundamental to Wasabi’s low cost. Wasabi has assembled one of the world’s most experienced and innovative cloud storage development teams with expert engineers from Carbonite (an early pioneer in cloud storage founded in 2005), Oracle, Verizon, and other industry technology leaders.

Since Wasabi was founded in 2015, the team has proven that it can stay ahead of any other cloud storage vendor from an innovation and pace of development perspective. The goal of Wasabi’s engineering team is to relentlessly drive down costs, improve performance, and add new features in a rapid manner.

Let's be frank, when it comes to hyperscalers, you're not that important to them. They have an extensive customer base, and it's easy for small-medium-sized organizations like yours to get lost in the crowd. On the other hand, smaller cloud providers offer significant advantages. You're more likely to be an important and valued customer rather than just one name on a long list. Hyperscalers operate on a massive scale and are not focused on providing personalized services to individual customers, and this isn't going to change anytime soon.

Wasabi’s award-winning partner programs for MSPs, Channel Partners, OEM and Independent Software Vendors (ISVs). These are designed for technology and services partners to integrate or bundle Wasabi storage with their solutions. They can integrate Wasabi storage with their intellectual property and/or 3rd party applications to offer repeatable, user friendly, integrated offers, priced and marketed their way. Wasabi’s partnership programs offer several advantages to end-users. These programs are designed to establish a collaborative relationship between Wasabi, it’s partners and end-users, providing benefits to everyone.

AWS, Azure, and GCP are not at risk of going out of business, but that doesn't mean that they offer the best storage solution or that they are going to support every product in their portfolio forever. The big cloud players all have bloated product lines. They sell dozens of different products from compute, storage and networking services to blockchain applications, to machine learning solutions to security tools. With so many different products to support and enhance, it is difficult for them to maintain expertise and leadership across the board.

Our worldwide customer base believes that Wasabi provides a safe and intelligent alternative to AWS, Azure, GCP, and other cloud services. Some of the biggest names in media, healthcare, and education entrust their data to us. The continuous growth in our total customers, storage capacity, and global footprint is a clear indication of a bright future for Wasabi, our partners, and customers.
