“The Wasabi-Rubrik solution fulfilled all the checkboxes when it came down to CJIS compliance and restore time. We couldn’t have chosen a better service for our city.”

— Edgar Trenado, Information Technology Manager, City of Beaumont, CA

Overview

Beaumont is a city in Riverside County, California with a population of more than 50,000. The municipal government is responsible for storing the data associated with the city hall as well as the Beaumont Police Department. Before adopting Rubrik and Wasabi, the City of Beaumont ran their legacy system consisting of onsite instances at both sites with no replication or offsite storage between them.

Challenge

Following a series of ransomware attacks on neighboring cities and school districts, the City of Beaumont was looking to increase the security of their data to mitigate a similar attack if it happened to them. In particular, they wanted to move their data into offsite storage in the cloud. Their previous storage implementation was kept entirely on location at Beaumont City Hall and the Beaumont Police Department, leaving them vulnerable to threats both physical and digital. The combined solution of Rubrik and Wasabi’s total cost of ownership and ease of use made sense for the City of Beaumont.

Solution: Rubrik + Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage

The City’s IT services provider Nth Generation selected Rubrik to be the City’s new data management solution and Wasabi as the storage cloud destination. Rubrik is easy to deploy and can interface with a variety of data sources, including the cloud. Nth Generation knew offsite storage to be an essential component of any ransomware mitigation strategy, and that the city wanted their data kept offsite for an additional layer of security. With multiple data center locations on both coasts of the United States as well as Amsterdam and Tokyo, data can be kept safely offsite. Wasabi also meets Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) requirements for data security, which was imperative for the Beaumont Police Department. Now, all of the City of Beaumont’s data is kept secure, remote, and compliant.

Results

Before Rubrik and Wasabi, the City of Beaumont’s ransomware strategy was below where they wanted it to be. Though functional, their data was kept onsite and in storage that left it vulnerable to cyberattacks. “It was basically a shot in the dark if we were able to recover,” said Crawford. With their data now stored on Rubrik and Wasabi Hot Cloud Storage, they can be assured that their data is secure and instantly accessible. The joint Rubrik-Wasabi solution was easily deployed and provided lower total cost of ownership that aided the City of Beaumont in their defense against ransomware. “The Wasabi-Rubrik solution fulfilled all the checkboxes when it came down to CJIS compliance and restore time. We couldn’t have chosen a better service for our city,” said Edgar Trenado, Information Technology Manager at the City of Beaumont.
